The theme for Black History Month (BHM) 2024 is ‘Reclaiming Narratives’ which is a wonderful opportunity for schools and settings to highlight the untold stories and histories of Black people in the UK.

We have created a new resource for 2024 which you can download below. It’s full of ideas and links along with suggestions to aid good practice during BHM and throughout the year. We hope that you will find the resource and suggestions useful. For further resources visit the Grid website and download our BHM timeline and resources from previous years which are packed with more support.

Whilst October is the key month for celebration, we believe that Black history should be actively incorporated into all aspects of school life throughout the whole year. Our Wellbeing team support schools, settings and trusts with their goals and hope you’ll acknowledge why Black History Month exists and move towards a whole school strategy for embedding racial equity and anti-racism.

If you would like further details on how the team can support you simply email wellbeing@hfleducation.org

Please follow us on Twitter, @HfLWellbeing, for additional updates and support about Black History Month and anti-racism support and take a look at our recent blog Can I tell you about... Una Marson?.

For further practical ideas, tips and resources for primary schools read Shammi Rahman, HFL Equalities and Diversity Adviser's article published recently on Headteacher Update. It explores how primary schools can use real stories and first-person histories to bring #BlackHistoryMonth to life this October.
